Jews in South America are a small though distinct ethnic and religious minority. The major influx of Jews to South America came in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s from the Middle East and Europe, and settled in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. On this tour you will learn about the history of these Jewish communities  while visiting some of the major sites in these three countries.

Sample Itinerary

Day 01 Buenos Aires

Upon Arrival at Buenos Aires International airport meet your local guide for transfer to your hotel.

The remainder of your day is at leisure.

Day 02 Buenos Aires  B

Full day Buenos Aires city tour with Jewish heritage sites tour featuring the Once area of Jewish institutions such as the Hebraica JCC, synagogues, Jewish theatres and schools, as well as the Rabbinical Seminaries. Drive through the Mea Shearim of Bam. A guided tour at AMIA (Argentine Israelite Mutual Association, site of the 1994 bombings) will be included. Continue the tour passing by the Jewish Museum at Libertad Synagogue (inside visit to the museum is not included).Transfer back to the hotel in Buenos Aires. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 03 Buenos Aires  B

This day is at yours at leisure to explore and enjoy Buenos Aires on your own. Overnight in Buenos Aires. The following optional tours are also available.

Half day Tigre – Delta, Rio de la Plata  (4 hours)

San Telmo and the Palermo Design Fair (One the oldest districts in Buenos Aires) (3 ½ hours)

Day 04 Buenos Aires – Colonia – Montevideo (Uruguay) B/L

Transfer to Buenos Aires pier to board your hydrofoil to Colonia for a short city tour.

After lunch at one of the local restaurants transfer from the beautiful Colonia del Sacramento to Montevideo city. Check-in to hotel for overnight.

Day 05 Montevideo (Uruguay)      B/L

Begin a full day Montevideo city tour featuring Jewish Heritage sites.

Visit the “old City” and Constitution Square with its Cathedral Town Hall. Pass by the Solis Theatre, Independence Square and Artigas Monument and the Mausoleum while gaining insight into Jewish life. See the Old City, Golda Meir Square, the Hebraica Maccabi Sports Center, the Sephardic and Ashkenazi synagogues, the Goes area, the old synagogue and  the main commercial street “18 de Julio”. Next we move on to the “Prado” with its famous Rose Garden, and the monument “La Diligencia”. Continue to Montevideo Hill for a panoramic view. Later we will stop at the Holocaust Memorial, the only one of its kind in South America. Back in the city we stop at the Gurvich Museum. Lunch is at local restaurant. Return to the hotel. The rest of the day is free.

Day 06 Montevideo – Iguazu Falls (Brazil) B

Transfer out to Montevideo airport in order to board the flight to Iguazu.  Upon arrival in Foz do Iguaçu, an English speaking guide will welcome you and take you to your hotel for check-in and overnight.

Day 07 Iguazu Falls    B

Begin a full day excursion to Argentine & Brazilian Falls. Upon arrival at the Visitors Center and the Iguazu National Park Entrance, board a gas-propelled train at the Main Station that takes visitors to the upper falls circuit and the Devil’s Throat (Garganta Del Diablo). Walk along the Iguazú River canyon. Afterwards, we return to Brazil to explore the Brazilian part of the waterfalls, crossing the National Park. The remainder of the day is at leisure.

Day 08 Iguazu Falls – Rio de Janeiro   B

Head to the airport of Foz do Iguaçu for your flight to Rio de Janeiro and upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for overnight.

Day 09   Rio de Janeiro  B

Board the cog-wheel train which takes us through the Tijuca Forest to the top of Corcovado Mountain for an opportunity to explore the tropical forest’s lush vegetation and to enjoy scenic views of the beaches and the city. Later we drive to the Urca District to board the cable car that takes us to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Drive through Flamengo Park to downtown Rio for some touring along Rio Branco Avenue.  If time and traffic conditions permit you will see the “Sambódromo”, the site of Rio´s famous Carnival parade.

Day 10 Rio de Janeiro  B/L

After breakfast the group will head for November 15th Square, the National History Museum and the 18th-century Paco Imperial, now a cultural center.  Stop for lunch. Then depart for a Jewish Tour to discover the Jewish presence in Rio, including Ben Gurion Square and Theodore Herzl Street. Visit the restored Grand Synagogue and the Jewish Federation to learn about the culture and history of Jewish immigrants.

Day 11      Rio de Janeiro    B

Transfer to the international airport for your flight home.
