Day 1 – Arrival in Ponta Delgada
Arrival at Ponta Delgada Airport. Meet and greet and transfer to the hotel. Free time for personal activities.
Accommodation and dinner at the hotel with drinks included.
NOTE: To enjoy the dinner, arrival in Ponta Delgada must be no later than 5:30 p.m.
Day 2 – Ponta Delgada / Pineapple Greenhouses / Sete Cidades / Ponta Delgada
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to visit an Azorean pineapple greenhouse, a fruit with Protected Designation of Origin, grown exclusively on São Miguel Island. Continue to the island’s western region and stop at the Vista do Rei viewpoint to admire the two Sete Cidades lakes—one blue, one green—nestled in a giant volcanic crater. Descent into the crater and stop in the picturesque village of Sete Cidades. Continue along the west coast of São Miguel and stop at the Ponta do Escalvado viewpoint, offering a stunning ocean view and a magnificent panorama over the villages of Mosteiros and Ferraria, site of the island’s last volcanic eruption in 1811. Return to Ponta Delgada and lunch at a local restaurant. Free afternoon. Accommodation.
Note: This day’s program ends in the city center to make the most of the free time. After the included lunch, feel free to explore the area at your own pace or visit a monument or museum of your choice. (Return to the hotel will be at the guest’s own expense.)
Day 3 – Ponta Delgada / Ribeira Grande / Gorreana Tea / Furnas / Terra Nostra Park / Ponta Delgada
Breakfast at the hotel. Depart via the northern highway to Ribeira Grande. Brief stop in the town center to admire the 17th–18th century Baroque architecture. Opportunity to taste a local liqueur produced on the largest island of the Azores. Stop at the Santa Iria viewpoint for a spectacular coastal view. Continue to the Gorreana tea factory, in operation since 1883, with tasting of the teas produced there, known for their distinct flavor and aroma. Stop at Pico do Ferro viewpoint, overlooking the crater of the dormant Furnas volcano, and enjoy views of the lake and village. Arrival at Furnas Lake, where the famous “Cozido das Furnas” (a stew cooked underground using geothermal heat) will be our lunch today (drinks included). Visit Terra Nostra Park, renowned for its layout, thermal pool, and impressive variety of botanical species. Stop at the Furnas hot springs, featuring cold and hot springs, mud pools, and fumaroles. Return along the south coast, passing through Vila Franca do Campo and Água de Pau. Brief stop in Vila Franca do Campo, the original capital of São Miguel. Return to the hotel. Accommodation.
Day 4 – Ponta Delgada / Ribeira Seca / Caldeira Velha / Lagoa do Fogo / Ponta Delgada
Breakfast at the hotel. At a time to be confirmed locally, walking tour of Ponta Delgada including entry to Senhor Santo Cristo Church. Lunch at a local restaurant (drinks included). After lunch, departure via the northern highway, passing through the parish of Ribeira Seca, which was partially destroyed by a lava flow from the Fogo Volcano in 1563. Ascend to Lagoa do Fogo via mountain roads through colorful vegetation and scenic landscapes. Stop to visit Caldeira Velha (entrance included). Lagoa do Fogo fills the large crater of the dormant Fogo Volcano, part of the Água de Pau mountain range located in the island’s center. Stop at the viewpoint to admire the lake’s beauty. Descend toward the southern coast with breathtaking views along the way. Return to Ponta Delgada, passing through Pópulo and the parish of São Roque. Return to the hotel. Accommodation.
Day 5 – Ponta Delgada
Breakfast at the hotel. Free day for personal activities. At a time to be confirmed locally, transfer to the airport.
